Lothal Tourist Highlights

The city of Lothal is located in the state of Gujarat in India. The city has been around since 2400 BC. Lothal is the main hub for science, technology, and archaeology. There have been many excavation exhibitions in the past sixty years where ancient artifacts, fossils, and bones have been found. It is also one of the most creative cities where the locals produce jewelry made out of bangles, gems, and beads for trade and export into Africa and West Asia. The science community in Lothal have gone as far back as the first study of cosmology and astronomy. Today Lothal has evolved in sophisticated navigational systems that can be seen through its many roadways and railways that lead to the city of Ahmedabad. The museums filled with antiques and archaeology, as well as the industrial artifacts make it one of the most haunted hot spots in the world. The main sightseeing highlights in Lothal are ancient docks, museums, cemetaries, townships, marketplaces, and mounds that were excavated many years ago.

When the city of Lothal was excavated over sixty years ago it was found to be in a separate parts that consisted of an acropolis, a town at a lower level, and a fortress. There were also shopping markets that were excavated, factories where beads were made, sheds, workshops, portable wells, underground and surface drains, and sealed baths. The housing structures that were unearthed were made out of bricks that were sun-dried, and built over three feet high above the ground. These ancient homes of the Harappan are also large tourist attractions for Lothal. There was also a wall that was excavated that was shown to be a protection against floods from hitting the town. The elevation of the homes showed the intelligence of the Harappan people as they learned how to build their homes and shops above ground.

Lothal Dockyard

The Lothal Dockyard is one of the most ancient dockyards on the globe. The knowledge of the ancient civilizations of the Harappans still astound scientists even to this day. The correct positioning for the dock yard and the construction that went into it are things that scientists see more today than millions of years ago. When the dockyard was excavated over sixty years ago it was seen that Lothal was a major port for exports.

Cemetaries

There are also ancient cemeteries that were constructed during the Dravidians period which have been excavated in recent times in Lothal. Twenty buried bodies were found in rectangular graves that were buried with ancient pottery. Most of the bodies were perfectly extended except for a few that were found lying sideways. One of the twenty buried bodies also had an extra body in along with it who were thought to be a male and a female. They were also buried with pottery. The pottery found with the bodies have been put in many of the archaeological museums in Lothal for viewing.
